Giovanna was born in Avellino, Italy in 1962.
She migrated with her parents to Australia when she was six months old and has lived and worked in Canberra since. Giovanna’s life experiences, her early years in Italy, her displacement to a distant, and at the time, strange country, along with its challenges and hardships influence her pieces, creating works of art in her studio that reflect her emotions and inner feelings at the time.

Every abstract painting is unique, with the quality and colour of oil or acrylic paint playing an integral part in her means of expression. Giovanna does not utilise traditional paint brushes or pallet knives, preferring several different shapes and lengths of specially formed sticks and short wooden dowels to achieve her desired patterning. The colours and textured layers are applied with direct purpose, each energetic stroke falling in a controlled manner to achieve a certain balance and symmetry within the accumulated depth of drizzled colour.
Many of Giovanna’s works feature a central focus point, a mirror into the soul, the use of mirror fragments in some works emphasizing the theme, from which flashes of paint emerge, energy radiating outward, past the confines of the canvas. Other works encourage the viewer’s eye to focus on black characters emerging and playing across the surface of a vivid multicoloured background.

Giovanna experiments with her painting technique on various other media such as wood panelling, glass and attains dramatic transformation of simple mannequin torsos through her fierce application of intense colour contrasts.
Giovanna’s works of art are not small, with some of the larger works measuring over 2m sq. that make a bold colour statement and a presence that cannot be denied.
